Job Creation
The Mabele Fuels bioethanol plant will yield substantial socio-economic and environmental benefits. Job creation, which is a national imperative in South Africa, is strongly supported by Mabele Fuels.
Over and above direct employment related to plant operations, the company’s feedstock procurement plan will be a key driver in job creation. The plan focuses on procuring grain sorghum feedstock from emerging local farmers, especially those cultivating under-developed land. Given the labour intensity of agriculture in South Africa, this will boost employment in the agricultural sector.
A Socio-Economic Impact Assessment carried out by Urban-Econ Development Economists in 2024 estimates that the total employment generated by the Mabele Fuels plant through direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts will amount to 7 889 permanent full-time employment opportunities, of which 4 560 will arise in domestic agriculture. This will have a considerable effect in increasing the income of the affected households and reducing poverty and unemployment locally.
